What we do in our intensive Italian language courses

The first part of the lesson focuses on the expression and special communication of the Italian language in order to practise Italian forms and manners. The second part of the lesson focuses on structures for using grammar and vocabulary in practice.

Class schedule

The lessons of the intensive course are held in the morning from 9:00 to 12:45, or from 11:15 to 15:00, or also in the afternoon from 13:00 to 16:45, with a 30/45-minute break. Three lessons are scheduled for three afternoons a week: Tuesday and Thursday for learning grammar in a technical way, and Friday for expression and communication. After the lessons, there are self-study exercises, with homework (1 to 2 hours per day).

After the lessons

To engage with the city and Italians, there is a program of extra-curricular activities (visits, meetings, entertainment). Cultura Italiana is an excellent school for studying Italian in Italy: in Bologna, at Cultura Italiana, a full immersion in the living Italian language. Visits, walks, meetings, aperitifs, and appointments around the city to meet Italian people and chat in Italian outside of school.

Language level progression

A four-week course corresponds to one level; each level consists of two teaching units. One teaching unit is a work project for 2 weeks. Each level is divided into 2 teaching units.

A non-European language speaker has a different learning pace and in general will require twice the amount of time to reach the same competency levels.

The average learning rate of for an European language speaker is 12 weeks to reach the B1 level, and a further 12 weeks to reach the C1 level. This progression generally depends on the student, their natural ability, and their intensity and frequency of contact and exposure they have to the Italian language.

Student’s levels

Student levels defined by the test on their first day will change over the weeks between group participants, depending on their different learning paces. If marked differences develop in the group, then the school will decide to divide the class in smaller groups and reduce lesson times. If the formed class has :

  • 4-5 people: the lesson will last three lesson-hours
  • 2-3 people: the lesson will last two and a half lesson-hours
  • 1 person: the lesson will last one and a quarter lesson-hours.

Small groups usually do more intensive work in class and at home: in this way the same or better results are guaranteed. Students will certainly reach the same level of bigger groups.

Active learning

At Cultura Italiana, students “learn by doing.”

They learn authentic Italian by speaking with Italians, away from mass tourism. Classes focus on real-life conversation. The grammar is a tool. Lessons are interactive, engaging, and delivered in a relaxed atmosphere.

Each class is led by experienced teachers who are experts in teaching Italian as a second language. They focus on clear expression, comprehension, and effective use of the language. With this approach, students absorb grammar and vocabulary through immersion. To support this, students can also attend organised events with Italians. Giving them a chance to practice in real conversations and build confidence.

Outside of class, students should spend about two hours a day practicing, revising, and organising what they’ve learned. This can be done at school or at home. This process builds a personal “language treasure box” that provides them with confidence when they communicate and express themselves.

The intensive language courses are challenging, as Italian is a difficult language. But they’re also dynamic and supportive. If a class ever feels too easy or too difficult, students can always switch levels at any time.
