Technical knowledge of tools and their use. Practical exercises in drilling and grinding aluminium. Progressive practice with brass - geometrical and decorative designs. Welding and creating chains (necklaces and bracelets) with brass links.

Making of first jewel - “brass pendant with hook”. Finishing and polishing.

Making of three settings (cavities for securing the stones) – English style, rectangular with four jaws, circular with six jaws – used to embed (fix) stones (cut, emerald cut, cabouchon, brilliant cut).
Acquisition of techniques for making jewellery and settings: English style, rectangular with four jaws (e.g. emerald cut), cabouchon oval cut, circular with six jaws for brilliant cut (solitaire).

Programme
Introduction to equipment used in embossed and chisel work.
4 weeks
Sensitizing of the hand through the preparation of copper plates, traced and punctured.
This technique is used to place the design on the plate. When technical confidence has been reached, making of models by stretching the plate. First practical exercises with working techniques:
1.Rough-hewing in negative - “embossed work”
2.Finishing in relief - “chisel work”

Making of copper bas-reliefs of increasing difficulty. Study and familiarity of shapes (modular, still life, animals etc.), planes and surfaces, dotting (with a prick-punch), shelling, polishing. Leading to a deeper knowledge of the subject
